What is a Class 1 E-Bike?
A Class 1 E-bike is a type of electric bicycle defined by U.S. regulations. It has these main features:
-
Pedal-assist only: The motor provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling. There’s no throttle.
-
Top assisted speed: 20 mph (32 km/h): The motor stops giving assistance once the bike reaches 20 mph, but you can pedal faster on your own.
-
Motor size: Usually limited to 750 watts (1 horsepower) or less.
-
Legal access: Because Class 1 is the most “bike-like,” it’s generally allowed anywhere traditional bicycles can go—on bike paths, multi-use trails, and many mountain bike trails (though access rules vary by state, city, and land manager).
👉 Think of it as a bicycle with a “helper motor” that just makes pedaling
easier but doesn’t turn it into a moped or dirt bike.
{Dirt Therapy Bike Rentals does not support throttle assisted bikes on
our hiking and MTB trails}
